Vintage Quilt Top
Owned by S. Woods, Kent, WA

This quilt top was pieced by Grandma a long time ago using all sorts of fabrics including old dress shirts and work shirts (the flat felled side seams and sleeve plackets are in the quilt), Georgette and other thin fabrics from ladies blouses and an wide assortment of cottons and cotton/poly blends. The piecing had "issues" - there were no straight seams and a lot of fullness. The fabrics were fragile and I knew they would not stand up to "regular" quilting.

First I pieced an "under quilt" from muslin and laid the quilt top on top of the under quilt and then safety pin basted it together. The under quilt is (literally) holding the quilt top together.

Then I added the navy blue borders to the quilt top/under quilt, then put it on my quilting machine and quilted the Double Cable pattern in the border. The body of the quilt was so unevenly pieced that all I could do was tack the layers together about every 4 inches or so. The customer is going to take embroidery floss and tie the quilt top where I put the tack stitching.

I do have to admit that the quilt turned out all right. It is well loved and will be a cherished family memento of a well loved relative.

This photo shows the added side border. The body of the quilt. Notice all the different fabrics used in this quilt. Another view of the body of the quilt showing some of the fullness in the piecing.

Kaleidoscope Quilt
Evergreen Piecemakers

I belong to the Evergreen Piecemakers Quilt Guild and I quilt some of their charity quilts. The quilt below was a queen size quilt and was calling out for custom quilting. It is a Kaleidoscope quilt and it was pieced very well.
